Growing Older Living Well

karta över våra projekt

The number of elderly persons in Sweden is increasing sharply. In 20-30 years or so, around 25% of Sweden’s population will be 65 years old. More than half of the Swedish population over the age of 65 currently live in residences with inadequate accessibility. Half of the country’s municipalities are not satisfying the special housing needs of the elderly. For this reason, many dwellings need to be adapted to the conditions and needs of the elderly. How do we build a society that meet this challenge?

”Growing older living well” is a government commission aimed at supporting innovative thinking and the development of housing and living environments for the elderly. The program is managed by the Swedish Institute of Assistive Technology and will run from 2010 to 2012.

Facts about Growing Older Living Well

Dam som läser tidningen. Foto: Heidi-Kristin Andersson/Bildarkivet.se.What: We want to stimulate municipalities to come up with new ideas about functional housing and housing environments for the elderly. Municipalities and others can apply for support for pre-studies, projects and architect competitions.

Who: Growing Old Living Well is a government commission managed by the Swedish Institute of Assistive Technology.

Why: We are on the verge of a boom in the number of elderly persons. In 20 - 30 years, it is estimated that 25% of the population will be over 65 years of age. An aging population in combination with inadequacies in the existing supply of housing means that municipalities must plan in an effective way in order to meet future needs.

When: The project will run from 2010 to 2012.

Budget: SEK 50 million.

Current: Projects for preliminary studies have just begun in several municipalities throughout the country. In the near future, information will be available about which ones will receive support for architect competitions. The next announcement of project support will take place on May 19, 2011.
